Want to learn one of the oldest partnered choreographies of lindy hop? Working on your body mechanics, move vocabulary, and lead/follow control? Then the California Routine is where to start!

On Tuesdays we will learn, practice, and add switch roles within the structure of the California Routine! What is the California Routine? It is a routine that Whitey's Lindy Hoppers worked on at the same time as they were in California filming Hellzapoppin' in the 30s. There is speculation on what this routine originates from because some say it was an alternative version of the Hellzapoppin' routine ending, others that it was a performance piece for a club that they happened to be working on at the same time. There is even variation over what the final "California Routine" really is! The modern routine is heavily influenced by the Rhythm Hot Shots who learned and recreated the routine in the 90s and is what we will try to get through the start of this month.

No mater your level, this class will be aimed at getting in touch with your partnered mechanics and transitions. Please note that people will be asked to attempt both leading and following in this class set. We will be focusing on the first part of the routine and trying to use that structure to help learn more about partnered mechanics. It is a good way to get into the feel of swing and get your body and mind working! Check it out!

Also, if you would like to join us for Tacos beforehand, we usually meet at the Torchy's across the way at 7:00 for some social time. Please join us!

Cost will be $5 per class. Bring a water bottle and your dance shoes!

he 53rd Monthly Swing Jazz Jam in The Gallery at The Fed featuring David Jellema on trumpet, clarinet and sax, Jamey Cummins on guitar, Tom Crail on upright bass and Dave Bedrich on drums.

Bring your axe, voice, and/or dance shoes and JOIN US!!!

The session is hosted by the Austin Swing Syndicate and run by Hot Jazz Jammers of Austin. The jam will take place in the Art Gallery. Right before the jam there is normally a dance lesson in the same room starting at 8:15. Please do not disturb the dance class beforehand.
