I've been trying to contact some of my friends in New Orleans to make sure they're okay, see if they're evacuating to Austin, see if they need a place to stay. But because cell phone towers are down- I haven't been able to get through to anyone. Does anyone have information regarding our dancer friends from that region? Are any of them in town? What can we do for them?

I was wondering about this too. I would hope at this point that our friends are safe somewhere.
I'm sure that region is a communications bottleneck right now; sometimes in these cases they restrict cell use to 911 calls only. Also, if the power is out in the area those cell towers typically only have a few hours of backup if any at all. It makes me wonder if only owning a cell phone is really a good idea.

apparently many cell towers are "down." I was thinking this was literal, that they are actually no longer standing due to the winds. I've also heard that landlines are down too, so having both wouldn't necessarily help in this situation.
I don't know if there's any kind of fundraiser or donations collection we could do that would be helpful- or if they are in town whether they'd feel like dancing- waiting to hear what everyone's situation is...

I'm always blown away by the genuine thoughtfulness and 'goodness' of our dance community. I hope our N.O. dancer friends are all safe and OK, but this thread makes me smile and feel all warm and tingly inside that Austin peeps are such nice people! :flowers:

Yes, I just got some bounced to me. funny. I figured aol was a safe bet. I guess i just don't understand how it works.
I've got a couch and floor space at my apartment.
So, if anyone hears anything- please post so we can gather our resources to help out.
Could someone please post to the yahoogroups as well? I submitted a post, but because I was put on probation oh so many months ago all my messages have to be reviewed by the moderators and it will take forever or not at all to get posted.... thanks!
One of the guys is talking about visiting New Orleans in October. I have serious doubts that anybody will be visting New Orleans anytime soon.
Odds are, most of our friends in New Orleans are homeless and carless. Probably a few are now unemployed.
I think once people have a chance to watch TV tonight, read up, the magnitude of all this will sink in. As of right now, the City and New Orleans is Lake Pontatrane, this is pretty close to the worst case scenario that people have been talking about for years.

I got through (although briefly) to one of my friends in New Orleans a few hours ago via cell phone. Most likely the best bet is to call LATE at night (during the least amount of inbound calls to N.O.) and try several times. I'd take a few (hundred) times to call in but you should be able to get connection. Took about 10-15 tries to get through for me. The call lasted about a minute before disconnecting. :(
Btw, this was calling from a Sprint PCS cell phone to another person using Sprint PCS.
If you can't hold back tears well, I don't recommend reading it at work.

See how cheerful and optimistic I am being about the whole thing? Everyone is safe. Everyone is fine. They're making fudge and complaining that they didn't pack enough underwear. My dad is actually looking forward to helping people rebuild things when they get back home. He's been making furniture for the past few years, so maybe he'll make more for people who lost things, or help them with other practical woodwork.
But ... I can't look at photos of New Orleans or the surrounding area without crying. The twin span, in pieces. The I-10 underpass near my grandparents' house, with a small lake building under it. Houses covered to the rooftops. Hotels with windows gone and hundreds of curtains hanging out. The Superdome, with half its roof covering peeled off completely.

Has anyone heard from Lenore, Reuel or any of the other Baton Rouge folks?
NPR is reporting that the folks in the Superdome will be evacuated to the Astrodome in Houston.
T B)
I've called and emailed Lenore, Jamie, and Laurie, the Baton Rouge girls for days now... to no avail. Everything is all down, including the LSU email servers. Aimee could not be reached in Dallas, as she also has a LA number. Reuel is safe since he moved to Tennessee a few weeks back for grad school, and I hope that Amber is with him too. Also keep a prayer in your thoughts for these people's families, as most of them are from New Orleans.

One of the NYC dancers on Yehoodi has started a thread about how dancers can help the dancers in NO/MS/AL that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.
I'm gonna start the ball rolling by compiling a list of people who can host folks that have been displaced. If you can host, please PM me with how many people you can host and any special things I may need to know (i.e. pets, smokers, etc.). Right now, I'm just gonna keep a list and if I hear of folks who need housing, I'll ask the people on the list.
As needs arise, or don't arise, I'll go from there.
I've also placed a few calls on raising funds/supplies for hurricane victims. I've called the American Red Cross, United Way and Salvation Army. If there are local organizations you can think of that I should call for info, please pass them along my way as well. I'm kinda running into a block as to who to call...

Just got in touch with Aimee. Most of the New Orleans area dancers are holed up at a fellow dancer's house in northern Louisiana (sorry, don't remember the name).
She's still in Baton Rouge helping out, and Lenore is with her family.

Jeremy, thanks for the update. If anyone speaks to the NO/Baton Rouge folks soon, please let them know if they can make it to Austin, we have folks who can help.
I also got call backs from the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. I hope to pitch some ideas to the Syndicate board tomorrow about fundraising for the victims.

Pirate Pants: I got Lance in my Pants!
Hey y'all. I'm so sorry that y'all were in suspense for so long. Things are super crazy down here. Baton Rouge was hit and there are lots of power outages still, but for the most part people in Baton Rouge are ok. The storm hit us Monday morning and our power has been out since then. I'm writing from a Coffee shop.
Cell phones have been crazy too. It's pretty crazy. I'm planning to drive to Laffayette tonight just to talk to my Mom and Brother, I haven't been able to get them on the phone much.
New Orleans is a disaster y'all. Metairie, where I'm from is now a swamp exibit complete with sharks and dolphins pushed in from the Gulf. CRAZY!!! I'm glad that Jeremy got in touch with Aimee, I still haven't reached her and she lives next door to me. I have no clue where my dad is.
As for the other dancers, Robert Claypool called me to let me know that he was heading up to Northern Louisiana to stay with Robert Foster there. With him are a whole bunch of local dancers. I know that Dominic, Jayna, and Albert are all there. Kat has been living in New Orleans all summer but actually just moved to D.C. on Thursday. Reuel is in Tennessee. Amber is in Baton Rouge. Mike moved to Dallas. Other than those guys I don't know. I'm glad that Keith is safe, I don't have time to get onto Yehoodi to see where he is or what he said but I'll get there eventually.
My email address was at Computercc.com, a New Orleans based computer company. If you need to get in touch with me you can email, lsaltz1{a-t}lsu{d-o-t}edu or just keep trying my cell phone. I've not been receiving many calls but I can receive text messages.
Thanks for your concern.
